Five candidates for Inter-American Development Bank Presidency

Five candidates have been nominated by the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean for the post of president of the Inter-American Development Bank. The nominations were filed with the IDB during the 45-day registration period.

The candidates are:

  • João Sayad from Brazil
  • Luis Alberto Moreno from Colombia
  • Mario Alonso from Nicaragua
  • Pedro Pablo Kuczynski from Peru
  • José Alejandro Rojas from Venezuela

The IDB Board of Governors will hold an extraordinary meeting on July 27 to select the president of the world’s oldest and largest regional multilateral development financial institution. The new chief executive will have a five-year mandate.

To be elected president, a candidate must obtain support from countries that represent the majority of the IDB capital and also the absolute majority of the governors of the 28 member countries from the Americas (26 borrowing countries, Canada and the United States). The IDB has 47 member countries in total.

The IDB is the main source of multilateral development financing for Latin America and the Caribbean. Incumbent President Enrique V. Iglesias held the post since 1988. The previous presidents were Felipe Herrera (1960-1971) and Antonio Ortiz Mena (1971-1987).
