Assessment of Supply & Demand of Group Microfinance Services in GY and SU

As an input into the process for developing a possible Bank-funded microfinance project in Suriname and/or Guyana, this study will assess the potential demand for microfinance products specifically designed for very low-income people and the existence of a supply to satisfy it. It will examine the situation in two countries, Suriname and Guyana, so far almost unexplored by microfinance practitioners. Its results will be highly relevant for national and foreign investors (i.e. Microfinance institutions, NGOs, consortia, etc.) willing to extend their operations to underserved markets. It is hoped that the Bank (SDS/MSM) will use the information provided in the study to determine the feasibility of developing a microfinance project to provide village banking or other group microfinance services to these populations in Suriname and Guyana.
