Access to Markets for Afro-Ecuadorian Youth: The Quest for Economic Rights

The objectives of this TC operation will be accomplished through the implementation of the following components: 1) Tuna Fruit production ; 2) Tuna fruit commercialization; and 3) Tuna fruit industrialization.
I. Production. The goal of this component is to increase and improve tuna production by: (i) establishing new tuna plantations; (ii) providing training and technical assistance to protect existing plantations, by improving soil fertility and facilitating transition towards sustainable agricultural practices; and (iii) providing training and technical assistance for tuna harvesting and post-harvesting. At the end of the project it is expected that families have improved their income. Project expected results are: 30 additional hectares of tuna fruit plantations established, 108 families applying sustainable agriculture techniques, and 108 families using improved tuna harvesting and post-harvesting techniques
II. Commercialization. The goal of this second component is to improve access to tuna fruit markets. This would be achieved by strengthening the "Tuna Producers Association of Ecuador" via training and technical assistance in legal affairs (to obtain legal status), management of micro-enterprises, marketing techniques, and business/financial planning. Emphasis would be given to promoting the associative commercialization of tuna fruit. At the end of the project it is expected that contacts have been established with at least 10 new potential tuna fruit buyers, and that the Tuna Producers Association would be legally established and commercializing tuna fruit associatively.
III: Feasibility study: The goal of this last component is to explore the possibilities of industrializing tuna products. This would be achieved by the commissioning of feasibility study that could identify new products, at least 3, and its potential markets.
